100th Post!

Posted by Ashley Hoover

So, I happened to notice this is my 100th post here on the blog. I thought it was worthy of celebrating and wanted to do something kind of fun. Below is an image of a 100 Lempira, the currency of Honduras. I will send one of you, my faithful blog readers, a 100 Lempira bill in celebration of this occasion. Here's what you have to do:

Leave a comment and tell me about the bill, who's on it, why that person is important, etc. And how much it's worth in U.S. currency.

Each person that answers correctly will be eligible to win. It's open through the end of this month and July 1st. I will draw from the correct answers and announce the winner! Have fun! :)

My initial undeducated guess is that the gentleman is Albert Einstein who later became famous for his line of hair products, Einstein Essentials and then later popularized the hairless moustache. It is my hope that if I am correct and am lucky enough to have my name drawn, that 100 Lempiras is equivalent to 3 trillion US American dollars which I would then use to build a zip-line to Honduras.
However, I must do some research to confirm my hunches and will edit my submission if I encounter any major discrepancies.

Well, it looks as if I made a few assumptions too many. It turns out that the guy pictured here is a gentleman by the name of José Cecilio del Valle. What I found most interesting about him was that her wrote the declration of independence when Central America became independent of Spain. He was a strong political figure and won presidency, but then was denied after a re-vote. He turned to writing then, and after winning another presidential race, he declined to take office.
The Lempira itself was introduced in 1931 and replaced the peso. It is named after a ruler who led a local native resistance against Spanish conquistador forces. It is subdivided into 100 centavos. In the late 1980's, the exchange rate was 2L to 1$, but as of today, 19L ~ 1$. 100L today is just under $5.40!
I hope this clears up any previous misleading information. Hopefully I have my facts straight this time :)
