Día del Indio

Posted by Ashley Hoover

Every 20th of July in Honduras, they celebrate "Día del Indio" (Indian Day) remembering a national heroe, the indian Lempira. According to history, he assembled a group of indigenous people to help ward off the Spanish conquistadors. The indians fought valiently against the much better armed Spaniards and held the off for a while. There are a few different stories of how he died it's generally said the Spanish killed him while offering peace since they couldn't defeat them.

The indian Lempira is remembered in various way during the celebration. There is a hymn that is sung recounting his deeds and the children dress up in native clothes. Many schools have a contest and choose the "Indio bonito" and "India bonita" which are the boy and girl with the best outfit. Sometimes they also have parades or typical foods focused on different indigenous groups of Honduras.

My school children celebrated the day in style. Here are a few pictures:

Starting of the festivities with the history of Lempira.

A group about to perform a dance.

Reciting a poem.

The Kindergarten's turn.

Some of the girls all dressed up.

And the boys.

The different grades put together displays of various indigenous groups.

My Birthday

Posted by Ashley Hoover

On July 18th I celebrated my first birthday in Honduras. I felt loved by my family here and friends that made it a special day. Here are a few photos.

My favorite, cheesecake! :)

I sorta walked in on the preparations a little early so this is the re-take. Hehe

They sang me Happy Birthday

Blowing out the candles

It's tradition for the birthday person to take the first bite of the cake.  Which usually ends up with someone shoving their face into the cake as you can see in the following pic, it can get a lil messy.

It's also common to the birthday person to get "egged". I avoided that since we were going out but it make for a good photo op anyway.

They took me out to eat after. It was really fun and a great birthday in Honduras!

Ministry in Yuscaran

Posted by Ashley Hoover

Every few weeks I have the opportunity to help out in a small town called Yuscaran. It's about an hour from the capitol city in the mountains. Adults and children come to hear God's Word and normally around 100 people faithfully attend. Here are some pictures of the last time I went.

Before the teaching began I joined some of the children and we  "fished".

Let me just say they can teach me a thing or two about fishing without a pole...

I may or may not have fallen in.

Listening to the message.

More faces of Yuscaran.

This particular trip we also washed the children's hair with shampoo for lice.

And set up a Beauty Salon in the back of the van to cut the girl's hair.

Waiting for the snack afterwards.

Pastor's Conference

Posted by Ashley Hoover

A couple months ago we were able to make a couple trips to speak at two different pastor's conferences to share about the ministry of CEF in Honduras. It was a great opportunity and I believe God will do some amazing things with the contacts we made and the interest that was shown among the pastors. Here are some pictures from Baptist pastors. I didn't get any of the second trip.
Our display of material.

A few of our amazing committee members that manned the table and sales.

The National Director Altagracia sharing about CEF and how they can become involved.

We gave out Mailbox Club lessons to each pastor to use.
