Things I learned in Honduras...

Posted by Ashley Hoover

  1. Any traffic rules they might have are pretty much made to be broken.
  2. McDonald's tastes different there than in the States. Pizza Hut however does not. (I don't know about Dunkin' Donuts, Little Ceaser's, Popeyes, TCBY, Burger King, KFC or the others places I saw)
  3. I didn't know there were so many American fast food places in Honduras.
  4. The American fast food restaurants are not nearly as good as the food Honduran people make.
  5. If you don't want to know what hot dogs are made out of here, you really don't want to know what they are made out of in Honduras. I just burned it and ate it, thought it best to not ask questions.
  6. "Tostadas" can also mean French Toast.
  7. Just because the drink is orange in color it doesn't mean it's also orange flavor.
  8. Hondurans are the most generous, hospitable, friendly people I've ever met.
  9. For those of you jealous of the temperature difference...hats, scarves and mittens do still have value in Honduras and I was glad I packed them.
  10. If the cheese is the only thing that will take some getting used to food wise, we are doing really good.
  11. Children are the best language teachers.
  12. They like to take pictures of everything.
  13. I still don't know why we gave children coffee for supper before they had to go to bed.
  14. Hondurans' patriotism would put some Americans to shame. They might not have a lot but they love thier country.
  15. Don't eat the "soup" the campers might make for you while washing the dishes. (No, I don't know this from experience, just an observation.)
  16. Hondurans eat red beans not black beans. Yes, the color does matter.

It was interesting! I grinned a couple times too. :) I think I would be a good Honduran, in one aspect at least: I take pictures of everything.

You forgot one "cunada"... ;)

17. Keep your brothers under lock and key. ;)

Fun times and fun things learned for sure! I'm thinking the banana flavored orange drink was the most interesting. Though that cranberry colored drink was...something else. ;D

I probably should have said this is not an exhaustive list either. :)

Glad it made you laugh Charity! While everything here is true it was supposed intended to be light hearted.

Sis, you are right, I missed a very important #17...my bad. I think if the cranberry drink had actually been made of cranberries it would have tasted better. :)

Ashley,

Great post. Here are some of my serious and/or sarcastic comments.

1. Very true
2. True - That's why I stick with the same order that sorta tastes the same. Changing up your order each time is like asking for trouble.
4.Some Americans will never get this, but it's their loss.
7. I don't want to know
8. But are their motives always pure?
11. Grammatically NO!, but they will correct you with no shame.
13. They do that there too!!
14. Are you sure you mean patriotism? or do you mean nationalism?

love this! and shame on me for not realizing you had a blog, I look forward to looking back at earlier posts!

David,

4. And they don't even know what they're missing.
7. Probably not but it's not as bad as it might sound.
8. I don't know the answer to that. Among the Christians I was around I would hope so.
11. Grammatically no, but who actually speaks like they do in the textbooks anyway?
14. Again, I'm not sure on that. Maybe some of both. Those I were around seemed to genuinly love Honduras despite of the many issues that exist. I'm sure there is a difference between the Christians and those that aren't however.
